Here's a handy guide for all you succulent lovers this winter!

Reduce Watering Quantity

During the winter months due to the decrease in hours of sunlight and the drop in temperature, your indoor plants will begin to require less attention. Now for some of you watering obsessees who cannot stop watering your plants you are not going to like this piece of news, but the heat is gone for the foreseeable so put your little watering cans down.

Remember to:

  • Only water your plants when the soil is dry on the top few inches.

  • This usually is around every 2/3 weeks in the winter months.

  • Overwatering your plants, especially in the winter can lead to poor growth and rotting roots.

Maintain Temperature

Now that the weather has cooled down it is even more important now than ever to ensure that you maintain the same temperature for your plants to continue to thrive in. Indoor plants, succulents and cacti all need to be kept a consistent temperature to ensure healthy, steady and even growth.

Avoid extreme heat fluctuations throughout your home, remember to always close windows and doors in the evenings. Also try to place your plants whether they're succulents or other house plants away from places that create cold drafts such as doors, fire places, windows and conservatories.

Increase Sunlight

Shorter days mean less sunlight for your plants to soak up. Try not to let them suffer, by moving them around the house until you find the perfect sunny spot. Whether it be on a windowsill, cabinet or shelf; the more sunlight they get the healthier they will be at the end of these long winter months.

Those of you who are lucky enough to have a conservatory might consider moving all your succulents into here for the winter months. But beware, for as warm as conservatories can get they can also lose the heat rapidly aswell; often becoming the coldest part of your house! So it would be wise to try and find somewhere else to place them.

Keep Clean

Dust and dirt can prove fatal when it comes to indoor houseplants. Grime reduces the amount of sunlight, warmth and water that your plants are able to soak up; leaving your plants vulnerable to poor growth and potential infections further down the line.

Remember to:

  • Rinse a cloth under a cold tap before using it

  • Wipe leaves delicately on both sides ensuring not to damage the plant

Bugs Begone!

Just because the warm weather has disappeared does not mean all the creepy crawlies you have been avoiding all summer have gone aswell. Now is the perfect time for them to try and sneak into your warm home and out of the perishing cold and rain. Once inside your home they thrive and can multiply at a fast rate and once they make home in a beloved plant they can be hard to shift.

Ensure that before you ever bring any plants into your home you quickly check them over for any pests, you don't want to be bringing in any critters directly inside. If you are unfortunate to find some thriving in a beloved plant make sure that you use a plant friendly pesticide to permanently put an end to the issue!
